About This Quote

Never leap into battle, when you may come quietly to victory at a walk. This quote is from a 17th century art classic “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri. In the poem, Dante describes the human soul as a journey through Hell and Purgatory. In Purgatory, one has the opportunity to escape the torment of being in Hell, but only if one has not committed any sins in life.

Once a person has committed a sin in life, they will have to remain in Hell for all eternity. In this quote, Dante is suggesting that a person should not jump into a battle or work before they are ready. They should take their time and work on something until they are truly proficient at it, otherwise they will end up destroying their own reputation when they fail.
